Event 3: The Delaware Pinball Open - Main Event Qualifying
Saturday December 9th
Certified IFPA tournament with 250% WPPRTUNITY
8AM Doors Open Practice. Practice ends at 8:45am for announcements
9AM Tournament Starts
$85 Tournament Fee - 100% gets paid out as prize money to top 24 after finals on Sunday
Tournament will use all 45+ Pinball Machines at the Delaware Pinball Collective. We will try our best to alternate the era of games played on. One round will be LCD/DMD games and the next round will be Classics/EM games. The matchplay software will pick the games played and will match the players up in groups.
This is a Group Match Play Qualifying tournament with Random Pairings to start and Tiered Swiss thereafter. If Tiered Swiss not available then Swiss will be used. We will play exactly 20 rounds using 7/5/3/1 scoring. After 20 rounds the Top 24 Players make the Main Playoffs on Sunday. We will not have a ‘B’ playoffs, you either make the playoffs or you don’t. Everyone will be seeded 1-24. Automatic Tie Breakers will be turned on. The exception to Automatic Tiebreakers will be for the 8th and 24th positions. All players tied with the same amount of accumulated points for the 8th or 24th position will have a 1 GAME tiebreaker to determine who gets into the finals and who doesn’t. This 1 GAME tiebreaker is significant and will result in the final placing for all players who finish 25th or worse in the tournament. Example. We have 10 players with the same amount of points who finish from 21st-30th in qualifying. They all get to play a 1 GAME tiebreaker. The person with the lowest tiebreaker score finishes the tournament in 30th place.
This will be done so all players know who is in the finals, who has choice of banks, and who they are playing in the 1st round. Top 8 players receive a 1st round bye in playoffs. Playoffs will be Groups of 4 players. 4 rounds total using modified PAPA format on 3 Game Banks with 4/2/1/0 scoring. Top 2 advance Bottom 2 Eliminated. Final position 1st-24th will be determined solely by your play in the playoffs. No points carry over from qualifying.
2023 DPO Main Event Finals (Held on Sunday, December 10th)
Sunday December 10th
8AM Doors Open for Practice and check in. Practice ends at 8:45am for announcements
9AM Finals Start
Once the finals start there is no practicing allowed on the machines that are in the finals.
Top 24 Players from the Main Event Qualifying will play in the Finals. If someone doesn’t show up the 25th person(or next highest in attendance) from qualifying can/will take their place. If a player fails to show up for round 2 or later rounds we continue as if they are still in the tournament and plunge balls until they show up or are eliminated. The format will consist of 4 rounds , playing 3 of the 4 games provided in each bank with the 4th unplayed game being used for a tiebreaker if needed in each group.
Top 8 qualifiers will get a 1st round bye. Groupings for first round will be (9th, 16th, 17th, 24th), (10th, 15th, 18th, 23rd), (11th, 14th, 19th, 22nd), (12th, 13th, 20th, 21st)
Games will be played one at a time. Each bank of games will include 4 games, with only 3 of the games being played. The 4th game in the bank that does NOT get picked, will be used as a tiebreaker should one be needed. Once a bank is picked, that bank can no longer be picked for the remainder of the Finals. High seed in each group will get choice of Bank or Order on 1st game. A Bank must be selected before a game is selected. Subsequent games the high seed gets to pick either game or position.
Example of this modified PAPA format. Bank #2 consists of Stars, Meteor, Spirit of 76, and Monster Bash. High seed in the group picks this bank (as opposed to order). The next highest seed will now have the option to pick the first game or order. If the next highest seed picks Stars, then the third highest seed will now get to pick order, followed by the fourth highest seed, then back to the highest seeded player. After game 1 is over, the highest seed drives the bus and can either pick game or order. Remember, only 3 of the 4 games will be played, with the 4th game being used as a tiebreaker.
NOTE FOR THE TOP 4 PLAYERS - YOU HAVE THE ABILITY TO PICK YOUR BANK IN ADVANCE OR YOU CAN WAIT UNTIL ROUND 2 STARTS AND YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHO YOU WILL BE PLAYING.
The games that are in the banks will be chosen by the tournament director before the start of the tournament and won’t be revealed to the players until the morning of the playoffs. Scoring will be 4/2/1/0 for each of the 3 games. Top 2 advance and the bottom 2 are eliminated. Should there be a tie for 2nd/3rd place a 1 game playoff will be played by the affected players. That game will be the 4th game in the Bank that was not played.
The 8 Eliminated players from the 1st round will be ranked 17th-24th according to how many points they accumulated in this round. Ties will not be broken.
In the Quarterfinal Round, the players advancing from the previous round will be reseeded according to their original ranks and divided into four groups as follows.
16 Players
Group 1: 1 8 9 16
Group 2: 2 7 10 15
Group 3: 3 6 11 14
Group 4: 4 5 12 13
The 8 eliminated players will be ranked 9th-16th according to the accumulated points in this round. Ties will not be broken.
For the Semifinal Round, the 8 players advancing will be divided into two groups of four. The groups will be organized according to the original qualifying rank as shown here:
8 Players
Group 1: 1 4 5 8
Group 2: 2 3 6 7
The 4 eliminated players from this round will be ranked from 5th-8th based on the accumulated points from this round. Ties will not be broken.
The four remaining players advance to the final round. The final round is conducted in the same manner as the Semifinal Round. The total scores for this round will determine the order of the winners. All ties in the final round are considered significant and will be broken with a 1 game playoff. The final reporting of points to IFPA will show 1st-4th place with no ties.
Top 4 will receive Trophies/Plaques, Top 24 will receive Cash Prizes

***No Lunch Break on Sunday***
Sunday has 2 separate events running concurrently. The Main finals are only for the top 24 players that qualified for it based on Saturday’s 20 round Match play qualifying.
The 3 strike group knockout tournament on Sunday is open to anyone who wants to play in it INCLUDING the top 24 qualifiers who are playing in the “Main finals”. If you play in both tournaments at the same time you will run the risk of causing an ‘intentional delay’ of more than 60 seconds, as defined by IFPA rules, which will result in a warning for the first offense and a score of zero for second and subsequent offenses.
