IV. Qualifying Round
Purchasing cards – Once a player has checked in, they can purchase as many cards from the desk as they would like, with each card consisting of a string of 5 different games chosen from the bank.
Playing An Entry – To play your entry, you choose a game and can either add yourself to the queue via the tournament website given at the desk, or you can ask a scorekeeper to add you to a queue. If a game is currently open, you still must be added to the queue and have a scorekeeper start you on the game. Once you have finished your game, you will raise your hand and wait for a scorekeeper to record your score. If you do not wait for a scorekeeper and leave your game at any time, the score will be recorded as a 0. It is the player’s responsibility to ensure that the score recorded is correct. Once your score is recorded, the scorekeeper can add you to the queue of a new game or you can add yourself to a queue.
NOTE - Scorekeepers will not track down players who are next in line to play. We will call out the persons name ONE TIME and if they don't acknowledge the scorekeeper we will remove them from the queue and go to the next player in line.
Once you have completed 5 different games, the scorekeeper will ask the player if they would like to submit this ticket and record it into the scoring system or void the entire entry.
A player may only have a single open ticket in progress at any time. An in-progress ticket must be completed or voided before a new one can be started.
Also if at any time a player wishes to abandon a ticket, they may let a scorekeeper know and they will void the entry.
No incomplete tickets can be submitted. A player must play the full 5 games to finish a ticket and be counted in the standings.
Scoring – A ticket is a collection of 5 different games played in a string. You cannot take game scores from one ticket and combine them with another ticket. Only one ticket can be in progress at a time. A player can play and submit as many tickets as they would like to purchase.
Each player’s score on a game will receive a point value based on its rank compared to all other scores entered. The #1 score earns 100 points, #2 score earns 97 points, #3 score earns 95 points and #4 score and below earn 1 less point per position all the way down to 1 point. A player’s overall score for a ticket is the sum of the point total from the 5 games played.
Point rankings for games will change as new scores are posted so the overall score for players may change as qualifying goes on.
If any scores on a game are tied the highest point value of the tied scores is what will be awarded for each tied score.
Up to date game scores and rankings will be available to view on the tournament website and display monitors around the tournament area.
V. Finals
Finals Qualifying – When all qualifying games have been completed at 2:00 PM on Saturday and recorded, the tournament officials will tally up all players’ rankings and finalize the players above the cut lines. The players ranked 1st-24th will move on to A division with those ranked 1st-8th getting a bye in the first round of finals. The players ranked 25th-32nd will move on to B division finals. There will then be a 1 hour break as we prepare for finals. We require all qualified players to be present back at the tournament area by 3:00 PM including players with a bye. If any qualified player fails to show by 3:00 PM without any notice to tournament officials, their spot shall be forfeited and given to the next player who qualified and is present.
Ties for qualifying – In the event that two or more players are tied on a cut line for making a division or for receiving a bye, a single game tiebreaker will be played on Stars to determine the outcome/position.
Format – The "A" division finals will be played on the same bank of games as used for qualifying. The top 8 players will receive a first round bye. The remaining 16 players will be split up into groups of 4 and will play 3 games using 4/2/1/0 scoring. Two players from each group will advance to the next round until we get down to the final 4.
For the "B" Division, the finals will be held on non-tournament games that will be on free play during all 4 days of qualifying. "B" division finals are for prizes and trophies only. The outcome of the "B" finals will not determine overall tournament standings. The "B" division will follow the same format as the "A" division.
Game Selection – Each round, the highest seeded player in each group will have choice of either game or play order. If the high seed picks position, then the next highest seed in the group will now have choice of either game or play order. Once a game is selected for the first group, the 2nd group will then have choice of game or play order on any remaining unselected games and so on until all groups have picked.
As soon as one of the groups finish their first game, the high seed will "drive the bus" and once again get choice of game or play order.
At no time during finals can a player pick a game currently in use. No machine can be picked more than once by the same group in the same round.
The original seed of players going into finals is what is used every round to decide who gets first game choice. At no time during finals will a player’s seed number change.
INITIAL ROUNDS
Top 8 players in "A" will receive a first round bye.
Round 1
Group #1 - 9,16,17,24
Group #2 - 10,15,18,23
Group #3 - 11,14,19,22
Group #4 - 12,13,20,21
QUARTERFINAL ROUNDS (16 PLAYERS)
In the quarterfinal rounds, the players advancing from the previous round will be divided into four groups as follows:
16 Players
Group #1 - 1,8,9,16
Group #2 - 2,7,10,15
Group #3 - 3,6,11,14
Group #4 - 4,5,12,13
SEMIFINAL ROUNDS (8 PLAYERS)
For the semifinal rounds in each division, the qualifiers in each division (or players advancing from quarterfinals, if those were played) will be divided into two groups of four. The groups will be organized according to the original qualifying rank as shown here:
8 Players
Group #1 - 1,4,5,8
Group #2 - 2,3,6,7
FINAL ROUNDS (4 PLAYERS)
In each division, four players advance to the final round. The final round for each division is conducted in the same manner as the semifinal round. The total scores for this round will determine the ordering of winners in each division. All ties in the final round are considered significant.
WINNERS
Winners will receive cash prizes during an awards ceremony shortly following the conclusion of all final rounds. Winners must be present to receive prizes.
TIEBREAKING
Significant ties between players at the end of the quarterfinal, semifinal, or final round will be resolved by one tie-breaking game. Note that a tie is only significant if it affects whether or not a player will advance toward the final round, or occurs in the final round.
In a tie-breaking game, the highest-seeded player can choose the machine to be played from among those not being played and were not previously selected during that round. The highest-seeded player may instead choose the order of play. The choice of game, if it has not been chosen, or the choice of order of play, will proceed through all tied players from highest seed to lowest seed until the machine to be played and order of play have been established.
In the unlikely event of an exact scoring tie on the tie-breaking game, only those affected players will play another tie-breaking game, on another game chosen in similar fashion, under the same rules.
REPORTING FINAL POSITIONS
Final positions as reported to the IFPA, will be based upon player’s point total earned during the final rounds, apart from the top 4 players, or based upon their qualifying ranking should they fail to qualify for division “A” finals.
VI. Machine Notes
Settings – Any changes to a machine in significant ways will be posted on said machine, such as physical modifications to shots or layout beyond factory adjustable posts and lane guides. Any modifications to a game’s software beyond factory menu adjustments, such as modified ROMs or tournament patches, will also be posted.
Extra Balls – During qualifying, any game that has extra balls still turned on, those extra balls shall be allowed to be played. During finals, those extra balls will no longer be allowed. A player must plunge their extra ball. They will be allowed to use flipper buttons to set up any lane change etc. for a skill shot, but once the ball has been plunged they must walk away. Any player who steps up to a machine and plunges another player’s extra ball will be DQ’d for that game.
NOTE - To keep the tournament pace moving along and to eliminate downtime, we will be enforcing the pace of play. When a new game starts, you will have 3 minutes to be at the game. Once a game starts, you will have 60 seconds inbetween balls to be at the game.
ADDITIONAL RULES INFORMATION:
Any request for a ruling not contained within this document will be referred to the most recent combined PAPA/IFPA Rules.
