First round starts at 12:00 pm noon
We're trying something new. Qualifying is group match play until 8 people have advance to the finals. Players at the top of the standings will advance to the finals until we have at least 8 players in the finals:
After round 6 - Finals starts with the top 2 advance
After round 7 - Finals increases to 4 players
After round 8 - Finals increases to 8 players
*Note: if there are ties we will include additional players in the finals rather than playing a tiebreaker (up to a maximum of 50% of the qualifying players)
In the finals the 8 players will play a head-to-head round robin (you play one two-player game vs each of the other 7 players).
After the round robin, the top 4 will play in a single 4-player Grand Final game.
---------
That's all you need to know but there are more nitty gritty specific details below:
**Phase 1 - Group Match Play Qualifying**
Group Match Play
7/5/3/1 match points for 1st/2nd/3rd/4th in 4-player groups
(or 7/4/1 in a 3-player group)
Balanced pairings and arenas.
After round 6 we will start a Round Robin Finals phase. The top 2 players will be deactivated in the qualifying tournament and will be added to the finals tournament. If additional players are tied for 2nd, they will also advance to the finals at this time. We will use "Adjust Points" to ensure these finals players remain at the top of the qualifying standings despite not playing in the subsequent rounds.
After round 7 we will grow the size of the Round Robin Finals to be a total of 4 players (along with any players who are tied for the 4th highest number of qualifying match points). This may mean 0 player advance after this round if there was a 4-way tie for first place after round 6 for example. We'll again use "Adjust Points" to keep these players at the top of the qualifying standings.
After round 8 we will grow the size of the Round Robin Finals to be a total of 8 players. Again tie players will also advance. If the "tied players advance rule" would cause more than 50% of the players to advance to the finals, then instead we'll do a full game tiebreaker and will only advance enough players to fill up the finals with 50% of the qualifying players.
Match points earned during all 8 rounds will be used for the standings of players who don't make it to the Round Robin Finals.
**Phase 2 - Round Robin Finals**
Each player who makes it to the Phase 2 Finals will play a head to head match vs each other player in the Phase 2 Finals.
These matches will start up as soon as at least two players have made it to Phase 2.
Balanced (randomly selected) machines among games not in use by the Phase 1 groups.
New matches will be started as soon as a new pairing is possible using Max Match Play.
We hope all players stay through the end of their Phase 2 matches. If someone leaves before completing half of their Phase 2 matches their phase 2 results will be deleted and they'll have a final placement at the bottom of the Phase 2 standings. Players who won vs them in phase 2 will have their score reduced by one win as the match is deleted. If a player leaves after completing at least half of their matches, then their completed matches will still count, their subsequent pairings will be awarded as a win for their opponent, and their final standing will be based on the points they earned before leaving.
Top 4 will advance to a Grand Finals. If players are tied for the cut to the Grand Finals we'll use their head-to-head Phase 2 match result to break the tie if possible. In the case of a tie that can't be broken that way (e.g. a 3-way tie for 3rd-5th where A defeated B; B defeated C; C defeated A) then we'll do a one-game tiebreaker.
If Phase 2 is still going on at 6:30 pm we'll cancel the Phase 3 finals and use the result of Phase 2 as the final standings.
**Phase 3 - Grand Finals**
One game of group match play among the top 4 players from Phase 2.
Game/position selections made by the players in order of their Phase 2 points. For game/position selections ties will be broken based on Phase 2 head-to-head results; if they can't be broken this way then seeds will be assigned randomly among tied players.
